UGC for closure of evening courses at public universities

UGC issues 13-point guideline to the public universities.The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sent a letter to all the public universities asking those to stop evening courses conducted by the educational institutions.

Issuing a 13-point guideline for the public universities.the letter signed by UGC member Prof Dr Dil Afroza Begum. The letter was sent to the vice chancellors of all the institutions on Wednesday.

In the guideline the UGC requested the public universities to shut evening courses. As the courses go against the characteristics and tarnish image of the educational institutions.

The UGC guideline came just two days after President Md Abdul Hamid on Monday came down heavily on the evening courses in public universities.

At the 52nd convocation of Dhaka University on Monday President Md Abdul Hamid say that,a section of teachers turned university into a business institution disrupting its overall academic environment.

Healso say that, Different public universities have opened many departments, evening courses, diploma courses and institutes. Apart from the regular courses. Many students are coming out successfully from such ‘business course’.And a section of teachers are getting cash benefit turning the university into a business institution.

Expressing grave concern over the academic environment in public universities, the president say that, Many public universities turn into private ones at night.The campus also becomes a fair in the evening. This cannot be accepted at all.

Kamal Hossain, director of Public University Management Department of UGC, say that,The evening courses are being conducted at a few old and major public universities.Out of 44 educational institutions.

He also say that,We have come up with the guideline so that the universities stop the courses on their own.And other universities do not take initiative to start the practice

In the guideline, the UGC asked the vice chancellors of the public universities to perform their duties properly.

The UGC in its letter also requested the public universities to take its approval before opening a new faculty, department, institute and position.

It also asked the universities to follow the existing university rules in recruiting and promoting teachers, officials and other employees.
