Chittagong Abahani Kings in Fed Cup quarters

Chittagong Abahani Limited moved into the quarter-finals of the 13-team Federation Cup with one match to spare after securing a 2-0 victory over Brothers Union in their Group-B match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.

With Chittagong’s win, Bashundhara Kings also progressed to the quarter-final stage from the three-team Group as they earlier beat Brothers 1-0 in their opening match.

Brazilian forward Nixon Guylherme Rocha and Nigerian midfielder Chinedu Mathew scored one each for the winning side.Meanwhile, in the day’s other match at the same venue, Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society played out second successive draw in their Group-C campaign of the tournament as they held Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club 1-1.

Guinean defender Camara Younouussa scored in the 60th minute for Rahmatganj before Sheikh Jamal captain and Nigerian defender Osagie Monday levelled it to 1-1 in the 75th minute.Sheikh Jamal keeper Zia kept the post intact at the hour mark, saving his side twice as denied Bah and Arafat Hossain in 38th and 60th minutes respectively.

Rahmatganj’s chance of reaching quarter-finals now depends on the result of the last Group–C match between Sheikh Jamal and Saif Sporting Club, scheduled to be held on December 27.However, the fixture of the remaining matches of competition has been deferred by one day, meaning there will be no play today.

The schedule was revised to facilitate Dhaka North and South City Corporations honouring freedom fighters in a ceremony on Monday at BNS.
